Crafting at Midnight Wood Slice Ornaments

Designed In Design Space
Design space allows for quick and easy editing and creation of the design(s). For my children’s classmates I used their school logo and stylized mascot. Each design was surrounded by a circle and there was a smaller circle up top for the pre-drilled holes. The circle allowed using both the design and its inversion to make ornaments. Waste not, want not.
Cut Out With My Cricut
Use an electronic cutting machine to cut out the design. The design can be cut out by hand, though there are some pretty intricate cuts in the image and the wording that would be best cut from an electronic cutter. I have and LOVE the Cricut maker. The maker quickly and easily cut the words out of adhesive vinyl and glitter gold and green iron-on (heat transfer vinyl – HTV) material. Unwanted excess material was subsequently removed, or also known as “weeded.”
Adhesive Vinyl
For this project, the adhesive vinyl was all Cricut brand. I highly recommend that people price compare to get the best quality and price for all materials, and especially for adhesive vinyl. The Cricut adhesive vinyl was purchased directly from Cricut during a sale. Amazon also has multiple options as well. Favorite non-Cricut brands include Siser and Oracal. Remember to do test cuts before cutting the design because setting may be slightly different for alternative brands.
Heat Transfer Vinyl (HTV aka iron-on)
The glitter Heat Transfer Vinyl is from Amazon. A variety set of glitter iron-on is available for $14.99. There is also plain heat transfer iron-on from AliExpress. Plain heat transfer vinyl is normally $3.87, and is often on SALE for $1.99. Just remember that purchases from AliExpress come directly from China, so it’s necessary to allow for longer shipping times. AliExpress is similar to Wish, with a personal preference for AliExpress because they have items that ship for FREE, like this one.
Iron On With The Easy Press
Ironing on the design was super simple and was done easily as seen in the YouTube video above. Using the Easy Press at 330 degrees, the material was laid out directly on top of the wood slice ornaments and ironed on initially for 15 seconds. To fully set and adhere the adhesive vinyl a final press was done after the adhesive backing was removed for 15 seconds. A Teflon sheet was used whenever pressing in order to protect both the design and the heat press.
After adhering the adhesive vinyl or the iron-on to the wood these wood slice ornaments are done and ready to be used on trees as ornaments, as gift tags, or even wine glass markers.
