Halloween DIY and Fun

Happy Halloween!  It is crazy how fast time flies. If you’re anything at all like me, the month of October has come and practically gone in the blink of an eye.  It’s definitely true that the older I get, the faster time passes.  Everything seems to speed up and get busier.  But, there I go off topic.  In this post I’m going to share some fun things we did to celebrate Halloween.  It is one of my favorite holidays because of the activities, costumes, arts and crafts, and decorations.  We did all of the above throughout the month.

Halloween Funtivities:

  1. Pumpkin Patch
  2. Pumpkin Carving – with a drill?
  3. Halloween Glowing Milk Jugs
  4. Teacher treat favors
  5. Cricut Halloween Candy Sleeves
  6. Glow necklace gift tags
  7. Halloween Family Costumes

Pumpkin Patch

We go every year to the pumpkin patch and I highly recommend it.  We previously have been to the big pumpkin festival over at Aloun Farms and this year was the first time we went to Waimanalo Farms.  My husband and I both liked the Waimanalo Farms pumpkin patch a little better because it wasn’t as crowded, and less hot and dusty.  Both farms pick their pumpkins ahead of time and when you get there you’re actually just selecting pumpkins from ones that have been placed back in the fields.  You don’t pick straight from the vines.  They also both have a hay ride that gives you a tour of the farm.  Pumpkins are sold by size at both places as well.  Below I have a quick overview of each of the pumpkin patches with their unique differences.  Click on the links to get to their individual websites.

Waimanalo Farms sells their awesome Aloha Made Lemonades (flavors include: original, pineapple, mango, strawberry, and Li Hing Mui) and Sweet Tea.  They have a gorgeous sunflower patch and a petting animal farm for the kids.  This year they also added a special kids games area and kids cow train ride.

Aloun Farms is a much larger event and has a lot of extra games and activities for kids.  They have a climbing wall, a large inflatable dinosaur slide, bouncey castles, and a carousel, to name a few.  There are also a lot more food vendors and eating options as other vendors are invited in to participate.

Pumpkin Carving – With a Drill?

Of course we picked up a pumpkin at Waimanalo Country Farms.  It needed to be carved and I used a store-bought kit.

Pumpkin Carving Kit

My kids each took a side to do their design.  My four-year-old got tired after a while of using the little pumpkin saw, so I tried out using a drill to complete his design.  It worked out pretty good.  It was much faster than hand carving and very easy.  I was a little worried my husband was gonna be a little upset about using his drill bits on a pumpkin, but I cleaned them off really well and he didn’t mind at all.

This year I also saved the pumpkin seeds and roasted them in the oven using the Pinterest instructions below.  I wasn’t so ambitious as to actually try to make something with the pulpy orange stuff.  If you’ve made pumpkin pie, bread, etc. from scratch then please let me know, because I’d love to hear how you did it and how it turned out.

Halloween Glowing Milk Jugs

This was the easiest DIY project for Halloween and it turned out pretty cool looking at night.  It’s fun and easy to do with kids.  Simply save your plastic gallon milk jugs.  Draw designs on the jug and place some glow sticks inside to have them glow at night.  We used black sharpie pens and different colored glow sticks.

Teacher Treat Favors

These super cute Halloween favors were made by my mom, who is much craftier, for the wonderful educators my children have been blessed with at school.  I wouldn’t consider this a minimalist craft because it definitely took a lot of loving time and effort on my mother’s part.  You can see how great they came out and it was minimalist for me because she got most of it assembled and I just added the candy and tied on the ribbon.  She cut out the little bags from paper using her Sizzix machine and had my kids color her fall inspired stamping.  Everything was glued together.  Candy was added and a little bow was used to tie the bags together with the gift tag attached.

As an added bonus my mother made tiny little note pads that are matchbook size and shape, which were placed in the bags as well.

Cricut Halloween Candy Sleeves

I made these sleeves using an envelope template on my Cricut.  After taping them together I just had the kids add stickers and slipped the candy in the pocket.

Glow Stick Halloween Gift Tags

These gift tags were easily made using my Cricut Explore Air.  I tied them on to glow light stick necklaces using ribbon and they were ready to be given to classmates.

Halloween Family Costumes

I wanted to re-use our Incredibles Family Costumes that I made for the Pixar Party on our Disney Alaskan Cruise.  I cut out the Incredibles logo in felt, which can easily be done with the Cricut or by hand.  However, my kids wanted different costumes for Halloween.

Kenny wanted to be an Avenger so I got him a Falcon costume and Kylana wanted to be Mal from Disney Descendants.  My husband and I will be Hawkeye and Black Widow, in trying to keep with the Avengers theme.

Cricut

I own the Cricut Explore Air and used it for some of the crafts in this post.  I LOVE it and I have it pictured below.  The Explore Air is currently on sale and would be a great Christmas present for someone crafty in your life.  The newest cutting machine is the Cricut Maker, which is an awesome machine because it additionally cuts wood and fabric.  But, I can’t justify buying it because I got my machine pretty recently.  See my post about the Cricut Maker giveaway, which is done now, but it goes over the differences between the two machines and why I love my Cricut so much.
